GROOMING FOR A BALI WEDDING — A TIMELINE FOR THE GROOM

Canggu and the Bukit have become one of the busiest wedding destinations in Asia, which means we see a lot of grooms in the weeks before a ceremony. Most of them are doing it the same way: leave everything to the last few days, get a haircut somewhere unfamiliar, and hope for the best.

It usually turns out fine. But there's a version of this that goes badly — the haircut that's three weeks too fresh, the beard that got trimmed too short the morning of, the sunburnt forehead in every photo — and it's entirely avoidable with a bit of planning.

Here's the timeline we'd give a friend. Work backwards from the wedding day.

Three weeks out — the decisive cut

This is the most important appointment, and the one most people skip.

Have your real haircut now, not in the final week. Three weeks is enough time for a cut to settle into its actual shape — fresh cuts look slightly different on day one than they do on day ten, and you want to see the version you'll actually be photographed in. If something isn't right, you have time to change it.

This is also the moment to decide the cut, not to experiment. A wedding is not the occasion to try a skin fade when you've had scissor cuts your whole life. If you're considering a change, three weeks out is the very last moment to test it.

If you're growing your hair or beard out for the day, this is where you set the shape so it grows in evenly rather than turning into a bush. A beard trim now, with a clear note that you're growing it, means your barber shapes it forward instead of cutting it back.

Two weeks out — maintenance, not change

A light tidy. Neckline, edges, the sides if they've blown out early. Small corrections only.

If you're on a beach holiday in the run-up — which most grooms are — this is also when you should stop being cavalier about sun. A sunburnt face in wedding photos is more noticeable than any haircut detail, and it doesn't fade in time. Sunscreen daily from here on, and a hat on the water.

Four to five days out — the final cut

This is the sweet spot. A cut at four or five days has lost the slightly-too-fresh look but hasn't grown out yet. This is the appointment that shows up in the photographs.

Bring a photo if you have one. Describing what you want is fine, but a photo removes all ambiguity, especially if you're booking someone you haven't seen before. Tell them when the wedding is — any barber who knows the date will orient the cut around it.

One to two days out — beard and details only

Shave or trim the beard, but be careful here: shaving too close two days before can leave redness and irritation on the neck, and a first-time beard line-up is exactly the kind of thing that produces a small patch of angry skin on the day.

If you're having a beard shave, do it at the same four-to-five-day mark as the haircut, not on the morning of. If you need a tidy on the day, a warm washcloth and a light tidy of the neckline is all it takes.

The day itself

Nothing to do except show up. A shower, product in dry or towel-dried hair rather than soaking wet, and no last-minute experiments.

If it's an outdoor ceremony — which in Bali it usually is — remember that heat and humidity will do things to your hair that a mirror indoors won't show you. Product with a bit of hold holds up better than something light, and a textured cut survives the ceremony better than a slicked one that collapses in the first ten minutes.

The mistake worth avoiding

The single most common one: getting a first-ever appointment at an unfamiliar barbershop two days before the wedding.

If you're visiting Bali and don't have a regular barber here, book the three-week appointment early and treat it as a test run. You'll know whether you like the result, and you'll have time to adjust. Booking blind on the Thursday before a Saturday wedding is a gamble with no upside.

Booking the whole thing

If you'd rather not think about it in stages, the packages cover most of this ground in a single session. The Gentleman's Package combines a haircut or skin fade with a wash, detailed beard grooming and a head massage — the sensible choice for a groom a few days out. The Xinature Package goes further, adding a facial mask, ear care and a creambath with massage, which is what we'd recommend if you want to arrive at the ceremony genuinely rested rather than just trimmed.

Either way, tell us the date when you book. That single piece of information changes how we cut.
