FADE VS BLEND — WHICH ONE SHOULD YOU GET?

Walk into any barbershop and you'll hear the same few words tossed around: fade, taper, blend, skin, drop, burst. If you don't know what they mean, you end up nodding and hoping for the best. We'd rather you knew exactly what you were getting before the clippers touch your head.

What a fade actually is

A fade is a graduated transition from short (or no) hair up to a longer length. The defining feature is that it goes all the way down to skin at the bottom — that's why you'll hear "skin fade" or "zero fade" used interchangeably.

Fades look crisp. They photograph well. They also grow out visibly faster than softer blends because the contrast between skin and hair is so sharp the moment new growth appears.

What a blend (or taper) is

A blend, or a taper, still graduates up, but it doesn't go all the way to skin. The shortest length at the bottom is usually a grade 1 or 0.5 rather than open blade. Because there's no hard skin line, the cut ages more gracefully — two weeks in, it still looks like a deliberate haircut rather than something overdue.

This is the cut we recommend most often to people visiting Bali for a month or longer, and to locals who don't want to book every ten days.

How to decide

Pick a fade if:

  • You like a very sharp, clean finish
  • You're happy booking maintenance every 10–14 days
  • You have a strong hairline that sits well fully exposed

Pick a blend if:

  • You want the cut to look good for three weeks or more
  • You're travelling and won't be back in the chair soon
  • You prefer a softer, less aggressive silhouette

And if you still aren't sure

Ask to see a grade chart. Every barber has one. A good barber will run the clippers over the back of your hand so you can feel the difference between a 0, a 0.5, and a 1 before anything gets cut.

At Xin Fade, we'd rather spend an extra minute on the consultation than hand you a cut you didn't actually want. Tell us how long you want it to last and what you do day-to-day, and we'll steer you to the right one.

A great haircut isn't about picking the most technically impressive option on the menu. It's about picking the one that suits your schedule and the way you actually live.
