If you're in Canggu for more than a week, the pattern usually settles into something like: surf before breakfast, scooter to a warung, work or wander through the afternoon, then meet people for dinner somewhere along Batu Bolong or Berawa.
The problem with that rhythm — from a haircut perspective — is that salt water, sun, and helmet air hit your hair every single day. A cut that looked sharp on Tuesday can look tired by Friday if you're not doing the small things.
Rinse before and after
Most people rinse after a surf. Fewer rinse before. A quick fresh-water rinse before you paddle out coats the hair with clean water so it absorbs less salt while you're in the ocean. It's a two-minute habit and it does more than any expensive product you'd apply afterwards.
Post-surf, rinse again properly. Leaving salt to dry in the hair is what causes that brittle, straw-like texture by the end of the week. You don't need shampoo every time — water alone is enough for the second rinse on most days.
Shampoo on a schedule, not a reflex
Daily shampoo strips the scalp of the oils it produces to protect itself — and in Canggu's humidity, those oils are already working overtime. Every second or third day is the sweet spot for most hair types. Use a gentle, moisturising shampoo rather than a clarifying one, unless you've put a lot of product in.
If you're surfing twice a day, you can afford to shampoo slightly more often — just pair it with a lightweight conditioner on the ends so things don't dry out.
What to do about helmet hair
Helmets flatten everything, and there's no way around it entirely. But you can minimise the damage by:
- Letting your hair dry completely before you put the helmet on. Damp hair pressed into a helmet for 20 minutes is how you get a shape you can't fix without wetting it again.
- Running a small amount of matte paste or sea salt spray through once you take it off. Work it in with your fingers rather than brushing — you want to restore texture, not flatten it again.
Book your cut around the swell
This sounds obvious, but most people don't do it. If you know a solid swell is hitting for three days straight, book your trim after the last session, not before. You get to walk out with a clean cut and no salt residue weighing it down.
At Xin Fade we see this pattern every week — the regulars who time it right always get the most out of their visit. Surf first, then sit in the chair.
A haircut in Canggu doesn't need to be high maintenance. It just needs a routine that matches the life you're actually living here.
